Biological BenifitsI would like to give credit to Dr. Mark Rapaport of Emory University for producing this report: Massage is reported to have an array of benefits, including alleviating symptoms of depression, anxiety, back pain, asthma, fatigue, and even HIV. A new study shows there are sustained, cumulative beneficial effects of repeated massage therapy. The effects persist for several days to a week, and differ depending on the frequency of sessions. Results of the study were reported on line in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.Study researchers, led by Mark Hyman Rapaport, examined the biological effects of repeated Swedish Massage Therapy and light touch intervention. In a prior study, the researchers found that healthy people who undergo a single session of Swedish Massage experience measureable changes in their body’s immune and endocrine response. "We expanded the study to show the effects of repeated massage because we believed the frequency of massage, or the interval between massages, may have different biological and psychological effects than a single session," explains Rapaport, chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Emory University School of Medicine. The study was conducted over a five-week period of time, assessing neuroendocrine and immune parameters. Study volunteers were randomized into four intervention groups to receive a concurrent five weeks of Swedish Massage once a week or twice a week, or a light touch control once a week or twice a week. "We believe that understanding of the mechanisms of action underlying the effects of massage and light touch in healthy individuals − including the effect of different frequency regimens on different biological systems − will help to guide the design of studies aimed at specific therapeutic effects for targeted populations." The following are the top reasons to consider Massage Therapy with a in home Massage Chair** ![]() 1. Aids in Tension and Pain Relief* Probably the most obvious of all the benefits is the relief of Pain and Tension. Back pain can be almost unbearable after a long day at work. Muscles, bones, and other soft tissues that have been working overtime trigger pain receptors. These receptors then send a signal to the brain, indicating that there is a pain in the back region. Massage can provide great relief to these structures in the back, which will eliminate the need for the pain receptors to communicate with the brain, leading to a decrease in back pain. ![]() 2. Relief and Treatment of Osteoarthritis** Many of our massage chair clients buy massage chairs because they help with their pain from osteoarthritis. With osteoarthritis (or degenerative arthritis) joint pain and muscle pain are not uncommon. The study referenced in this article was a 2006 Archives of Internal Medicine piece showing how a full-body Swedish massage helped reduce arthritis pain symptoms of the knee. The results were amazing: less pain, less stiffness, increased range of motion, and less time to walk a 50 foot path. I have found in my personal experience that massage chairs to tend to reduce arthritis pain and stiffness in many joints of the body, as well as increase range of motion. ![]() 3. Increase Blood Flow and Lowering Blood Pressure* The notion that massage can reduce pain and stiffness is a natural given, but the idea of a more visceral benefit, i.e. immune system, heart rate, and blood pressure is fascinating. A 2009 study of 30 participants demonstrated boosted immune response and lower heart rate and blood pressure. The participants were women with breast cancer undergoing radiation treatment. ![]() 4. Relieves Muscular Stiffness* Joint and muscle stiffness is an issue that can be extremely uncomfortable, and severely hamper one’s ability to perform routine activities of daily living. There are many reasons for joint and muscle stiffness. However, the primary cause is a lack of movement. Massage promotes lubricating membranes within the joint to release synovial fluid, which allows the articulating bones to move freely over each other with reduced friction and pain. Massage helps to free any scar tissue or connective tissue adhesion's that may be contributing to muscle stiffness. ![]() 5. Fighting Free Radicals** The body has a lot of repair mechanisms, one being cortisol and inflammation proteins. A daily massage has been proven to lower levels of cortisol, which is a stress hormone, and a decrease in cytokine proteins, which are active participants in the inflammation and allergic reactions of the body. ![]() 6. Speeds Up Recovery from Sports-Related Injuries* Sports and injuries happen, and the sport or activity that was the cause of injury can vary greatly. However, the types of injuries that are sustained during these sports and activities are primarily the same (muscle pulls or bruised) ; which means that treatment protocols are similar as well. Massage therapy assists in recovery in countless ways and can be a great adjunct to physical therapy or rehabilitation program. In fact, most physical therapy programs consist of some deep tissue massage, active release technique, acupressure or soft tissue mobilization which is all various forms of massage. ![]() 7. Aids in Cancer Treatment* The battle with cancer is a fight that no person should have to face. While many treatments can leave a patient unable to leave the house, a massage chair can be a great tool to help fight the battle versus cancer. While a reliable cure is still yet to be found, there are a variety of different methods that are used to combat the spread and metastasis of tumors and cancer. With all of the treatment methods that are available, the benefits of massage have been found time and again to produce positive results, and help patients fight with cancer. Massage has helped patients by improving overall circulation and relaxing tight muscles. ![]() 8. Studies continue to show that aging and elderly individuals benefit greatly from massage therapy. Regularly receiving massage has been shown to promote relaxation and stability while helping temper the effects of dementia, incorporating massage into a regular healthcare regimen, many older adults find a better quality of life and additional relief from a multitude of health issues. ![]() 9. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC): "Insufficient sleep is associated with a number of chronic diseases and conditions—such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and depression—which threaten our nation’s health. Notably, insufficient sleep is associated with the onset of these diseases and also poses important implications for their management and outcome. ![]() 10. Treatment for Fibromyalgia** It is the position of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) that massage therapy can be a beneficial part of an integrative treatment plan for those who suffer with fibromyalgia syndrome. According to the National Institutes of Health, “Scientists estimate that fibromyalgia affects 5 million Americans 18 or older. In that study, the researchers found that 44% of those surveyed chose massage therapy. Fibromyalgia is another pain condition frequently seen by health care providers, and one in which there often is no universally effective treatment. Studies have found that up to 91 percent of people with fibromyalgia use some form of CAM, and up to 75 percent use massage therapy." Source:
